Basic Safety Policies: What Are the Non-Negotiables for Every School?

School leaders often ask: “What are the essential safety policies every school must have?”
It’s a vital question—especially for schools that want to build safety as a culture, not simply check compliance boxes.

Despite painful incidents in India in 2025, the mindset around school safety still shows limited change. While NEP 2020 emphasises “holistic and integrated systems of safety,” many schools are unsure what this actually means in practice.

At Golden Circles Consultancy (GCC), we help schools cut through the confusion and build clarity—starting with the Basic Safety Policy Stack

The Basic Safety Policy Stack

Every school needs a foundational set of seven core safety policies. These policies ensure legal compliance, guide behaviour, and reduce risks before they become incidents. They must be reviewed annually to remain relevant.

1. Child Protection & POCSO Compliance: A clear framework for reporting, responding, and preventing harm aligned with legal requirements.
Look For: Staff can confidently explain who the Child Protection Officer is and how to report concerns.

2. Emergency Response & Crisis Communication: Structured responses for fires, health emergencies, natural disasters, and communication with parents and authorities.
Look For: Emergency SOPs are displayed visibly and accessible to staff.

3. Visitor & Access Control: Defined procedures for visitor screening, ID verification, and monitoring vendors, volunteers, and contractors.
Look For: Security staff follow a consistent script for entry and logging—every time.

4. Transportation Safety: Procedures for bus attendance, GPS tracking, staff roles, boarding and
dispersal safety.
Look For: Bus attendants use a written checklist before departure and after drop-off.

5. Hazard/Risk Assessment & Reporting: Systems for identifying, reporting, and mitigating risks across
the campus.
Look For: A digital or physical reporting tool exists—and staff actively use it

6. Bullying, Behaviour & Well-being: Policies that outline preventive culture, clear reporting, and restorative practices.
Look For: Students can explain what bullying is and how the school responds.

7. Health, Hygiene & First Aid / Infrastructure & Fire Safety: Standards for sanitation, food safety, medical preparedness, and infrastructure checks.
Look For:
First-aid kits are complete, checked monthly, and easy to access.
